You can go traditional and visit one of Northampton’s historic shoemakers, where velvet slippers are crafted from the same lasts as exemplary Oxford shoes, sat on hard leather soles with quilted satin linings. At Crockett & Jones, you can even opt for a bespoke appointment, customising the colour, material and embroidery. "Handmade by a specialist in England, our slippers undergo the exacting eye that our Goodyear welted footwear does," says brand director James Fox. Which means they're tough. Very much so.

But if you’re searching for something a little more contemporary, look to the collabs. Utilitarian specialists Suicoke have teamed up with South Korean marque This is Never That on a range of handmade slippers that feel just as comfy as they look.
